Hope you are all fine and dandy !
Today is day 6 of 30 poems in 30 days !
The poem today comes from The Pocket Rocket herself Susan McCartney.
A cautionary tale of our surveillance society.
My deep fat fryer has
grassed me up: by Susan McCartney
They’re knocking my door down
The WI have tapped my phone
My smart fridge has reported me
To the Food Police
To the FBI, the CIA
MI5 and
The WI
They say that with my teeth
I’m digging my grave see
So they’re here to save me
But they’ll have to get by
Pizza boxes stacked ten feet high
My knuckles they’re set to rapping
‘Cos in vitamins I’m lacking
Alright I’m a loafer
Guzzling chips on the sofa
But don’t call me bloated
From crunching crispy crumbed and coated
For pity’s sake
Leave me some cake!
Packaged, processed, pierced to ping
It’s my life, my body, my own thing
The fryer flashed its
lights and said
But we’re only trying
to save yer
From your unhealthy
behaviour
On my knees, please
I entreat – you cannot beat
Unknown bread-crumbed greasy meat
You toaster, wretch, betrayer – have you no heart?
Please, please make me just one more Pop Tart
Salads just cannot meet
The pull of the sugary sweet
There is no escape for me
They’ve come to arrest me
The grill it sobs as I go
Saying I told you so
It cries. Hang your
head in shame
You’ve only got
yourself to blame
I shake my fist
I growled and hissed
You know what this means
They’re going to force feed me greens
If the grill had a head it would have shook it
Saying - with proper food you have to cook it!
Food should be in
colours bright
Not grey, brown or
white
I sob – I’ll eat what I like
In panic I make a grab
For that left-over kebab
Fingers wagging they all stare at me
Not in our society
Not in our BIG SOCIETY
There are rules and WE
make ‘em
It’s not for you to
break ‘em
I didn’t eat my ten a day
Now they’re hauling me away
You may think this is all a lie
But your toaster is a spy
It’s reporting you to GCHQ - and the FBI
The CIA, MI5 and
The WI
Brilliant ...... Well done Sue...funny but true ???
Here's some interesting and perhaps scary facts about how we are being watched...
The first security camera was installed in Germany on a V2 rocket by an engineering company. Yes, it was used not for crime prevention but to watch the launch of a rocket.
The security camera was designed and installed by the Germans engineer Walter Bruch.
In 1992, 20 years after Walter Bruch developed the first camera, a security camera made its appearance in Olean, New York, USA. The city installed security cameras in a business district to help fight and deter crime.
The banking industry was the first industry to adapt security cameras – no surprise there!
In 1996, Axis Communications released the first IP camera.
Today, in UK and US, video surveillance cameras are used ubiquitously, but they are most prevalent in the UK. How prevalent?
UK has 4 million cameras, which equals to 20% of the World’s total surveillance camera installations.
UK hosts one surveillance camera for every 11 people – wow that’s a lot of cameras!
Only 9% of consumers today own a security camera.
Yet, around 67% of burglaries can be deterred by installation a security camera.
Only 3 percent of all crimes in the UK are solved using surveillance systems – don’t mistake this with prevention.
The average citizen appears on a security camera over 300 times a day – If you wonder why, look back at point 9.
Approximately 25 million surveillance cameras are operating around the world.
Many industries use surveillance or security camera systems to monitor areas where it is not safe for humans or entry is not possible – i.e. nuclear power plants and chemical factories – more industries could use this, aka mining.
Criminals also use security cameras. For example near ATMs to record your PIN number and bank information or to monitor behaviour – comings and goings of individuals.
