We all know what sneezing feels like, but what is actually happening to your body while you’re having a bout?
When you sneeze, your diaphragm, the large seat of muscle which separates your abdomen from your chest, goes into spasm.

Try as you might, you won’t be able to keep your peepers open while you sneeze.
“People try very hard as a challenge to see if you can keep their eyes open, but it is impossible,” says Jenkins.
Some people find sneezing sexual. No, really.
For some people, thinking about sex or experiencing an orgasm can lead to a bout of the sneezes. Although rare, two British doctors found in 2008 that for some people, there was a link between sneezing and sexual arousal. It was thought this was caused by a mix up in brain circuitry.
At least one person is recording all their sneezes
Peter Fletcher since 2007, has been recording every single one of his sneezes – with a brief description of where he was and what happened – on his blog sneezecount.joyfeed.com. A recent entry reads: “Garden. Moderate. A text about possibly imaginary agitated wasp.”
We’re not the only creatures to sneeze
Marine iguanas sneeze regularly to get rid of salt from glands near the noses. Elephants also sneeze through their trunks.
We don’t all make the sound ‘achoo’
If you’re travelling abroad, listen out for global differences in the way we sneeze. ‘Achoo!’ is common in the UK, but elsewhere the sound changes. There’s ‘Hatschi!’ in Germany, ‘Hapsu’ in Turkey, ‘Atchim!’ in Portugal and ‘Hakushon!’ in Japan.
Sneezing isn’t dangerous…
Contrary to some myths, sneezing won’t cause your heart to stop beating. Phew!
As I've been writing this I've been sneezing......coincidence ?????
Donna Griffiths. holds the Guinness World Record for the longest sneezing fit ever recorded, with an estimated million sneezes in 365 days – her first sneeze-free day coming 978 days after her sneezes began.
