Writing Tips

Today's Tip

Those who submitted work from last time....WELL DONE ! you are on your way to creative writing.

Today we are going to look at character.

In order to create a narrative and to make it believable, your character must be believable.
They must react to situations and threats true to themselves. If they do not, your story will not ring true.

So, how do you create a "true" character,

First things first, is your focus actually you ?.

A lot of writers actually place a version of themselves within their stories. A good  example is Stephen King. Many of his characters are writers..... ( TIP - Write what you know.)

This is a good strategy as you know how you will react in certain situations.

So what if you character isn't you......

You need to create a rounded "true" person..... HOW ?

Here's an exercise to start you off, and give you some idea.

  • Name - What's the name of your character ?
  • Sex - (yes please) Male Female, or other
  • Do they have an accent?
  • Education
  • Appearance
  • Clothing
  • What is their greatest fear?
  • What is their darkest secret?
  • Achievements
  • Loves
  • Family
  • Ambitions

That's a start. In the next lesson we'll look at story.
As usual, if you would like me to look at your work, send it via the message button, or email it to me.

I will provide this service free, as long as you subscribe to this blog.

Have fun !!
